I was born and raised in Woonsocket, RI where I taught third grade for 30+ years. My husband John and I lived most of our married life in Uxbridge, MA, a quaint New England town 20 minutes from northern RI. We raised our 2 sons in Uxbridge. John and I were lucky to be able to take advantage of early retirements. I retired in June of 1997 and John in November of 1996. I always said that if I got bored, I would do some sort of volunteer work, but that never happened. I’m always busy.
John’s love of horses and his determination to live in Florida finally won me over and we moved to Ocala in December 2004. We live in a small community called Derby Farms in NW Ocala. John works with his 3 horses, and I play golf and go bowling. We’ve met many wonderful people. The only drawback is being so far away from family, especially our 2 granddaughters, ages 13 and 15, and our grandson, age 19 months. FaceTime helps to keep us from missing them between visits.
I purchased my first PC when I retired. I was basically self-taught. I always used Windows until our sons gave us a choice of gifts for our 40th anniversary in 2007. One of the choices was an iMac computer. My son Dan has always used a Mac because he’s a graphic designer. He told me that we would love the Mac, so that’s what we chose for our gift. Dan was right!
Since acquiring that first iMac in 2007, John and I have added quite a few Apple products. We’re on our second iMac, and I recently purchased my first laptop, a MacBook Pro with Retina display. I also use my iPad Air, and John has his Mini iPad 2. We both have iPhones. Needless to say, there’s always a lot of App updating going on in the house. We also welcome Siri into our home from time to time.
I’ve learned about so many programs and apps, and have become much more comfortable with my devices. I’m getting more proficient with Text Expander and Evernote, and I don’t think I could ever part with 1Password.
I must be considered a geek now because every morning I check different Mac websites to find out what’s going on. I also follow Mac people and apps on FaceBook, Twitter, and Google+. I still enjoy learning all I can about Apple products.
Joining OMUG in September 2009 was one of the best decisions I’ve made!
