The Way I See It

I would like to take a few minutes to discuss the advantages of being a part of a Computer User Group and more specifically a Macintosh User Group. If you are brand new to computers (affectionately referred to as a “newbie”), you jump into computerdom with your head spinning, so much to learn, so little time. This is the exact reason that you would want to associate yourself with a group of other compassionate computer users whose experience ranges from precisely where you’re at to those who have been involved with computers for many years. By exchanging and receiving needed information at the meetings, via phone, or e-mail you are often able to get over that hurdle that has left you “dead in the water” and will allow you to move forward to the next computer plateau. Many of the members of a computer user group have an area of expertise either in the realm of certain software programs or by mastering various hardware components of the computer, such as scanners, digital cameras, digital video cameras, etc. By becoming aware of who to contact in the User Group for the particular help that is needed makes it far better than relying on calling for tech support and paying for long distance calls and sometimes difficult to understand advice. In other words help is often in your own back yard and you didn’t even know it. The monthly programs or presentations are an excellent means of making members aware of some of the more popular and often used programs for the Mac such as Appleworks, Microsoft Word, Print Explosion, Adobe Photoshop Elements, Adobe Illustrator, Quicken, Turbo Tax, etc. Also, it is an opportunity to show how CDs and DVDs are written, how to use a video camera or webcam with your computer, how you can speak and the spoken word can be transformed to typing using Via Voice. Maybe as a result of seeing a demo of the above items it will point you to a brand new use for that computer you just got and didn’t know it was capable of doing. Now aren’t you glad you joined a Mac User Group and don’t you wish other Mac users would do the same.

November Program

Get ready to be introduced to one of the major programs that many OS X users were impatiently waiting to be developed for use on OS X and that is Quark XPress 6.0. This is one of the leading Desktop Publishing programs and is a fierce competitor with Adobe’s InDesign and PageMaker. We are fortunate to have Brian Williams, Susan Pipala’s son to give the presentation. Brian will be visiting from Colorado and uses Quark in his work doing illustrations for a top notch clothing catalog. This is a high end program and many of us will probably not have an opportunity to use it, but it will give everyone an overview of what can be done with this outstanding application. Do your best to make this meeting and see this demo!

iPhoto 2: The Missing Manual by David Pogue

Apple's wildly popular iPhoto, for its new Macintosh computers, is a gorgeous, polished digital shoebox for uploading, organizing, printing, publishing, and touching up digital photos. iPhoto 2: The Missing Manual presented by best-selling author David Pogue-keeps pace with the recently revised software, charting the changes and illustrating the interactivity among Apple's iLife software products. With this guide, Macintosh fans can take their digital photos on to the screen, the Web, printouts, hardbound photo books, and even to DVDs, CDs, and digital movies. And they'll learn how to take iPhoto far beyond its deceptively simple list of features. The street price for this excellent Manual is $24.95, but with careful shopping you can end up with a better price. If you use iPhoto then this book should be on your bookshelf.

Mac OS X 10.3 Panther
The new Mac operating system is here. It is supposed to have 150 new features and so far the reports have been pretty good. As with all new products there are bugs and glitches so Apple has released a 10.3.1 update. If you want more details visit the Apple web site.

New iBooks
Apple has announced a new line of iBooks, utilizing the G4 processor and outfitted with Mac OS X 10.3 "Panther".

All new iBooks come with ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 graphics, a modem, a slot-load "Combo" optical drive, USB2 and FireWire 400.. There is no SuperDrive option available nor do they come with FireWire 800 or Gigabit Ethernet. AirPort Extreme cards and internal Bluetooth support are optional.

The prices start at $1,099 for a 12.1-inch display, an 800MHz processor and a 30GB hard drive. For $1,299 you get a 14.1-inch display, a 933MHz processor and a 40GB hard drive. The high end model selling for $1,499 also has a 14.1-inch display but comes with a 1.0GHz processor and a 60GB hard drive.

Lower Prices for the eMac
The entry level model, the $799 800MHz with CD-ROM and the mid-range $999 system with a Combo drive have been dropped.

These have been replaced with a model equipped with a 1GHZ processor, a CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo drive and a 40GB hard drive selling for the same entry level price of $799.

A "SuperDrive" equipped model previously priced at $1,299, is now available for $1,099.

iTunes for Windows
On October 16 Apple introduced iTunes for Windows software. This software provides Windows PC users with the ability to buy music from the iTunes Music Store, and it has the same features and capabilities as the Macintosh version.

The following Monday Apple announced that more than a million copies of iTunes for Windows have been downloaded in the first three days. The company also said that more than a million songs have been purchased in the same period.

Adobe Creative Suite
Creative Suite comes in two editions--a Standard Edition which sells for $999 and consists of Photoshop CS, Illustrator CS and InDesign CS and a Premium Edition selling for $1229 includes the three applications of the Standard Edition plus GoLive CS, a web design application, and Acrobat 6.0 Professional. A new file manager called "Version Cue" has been incorporated in both editions.

Current Photoshop owners can upgrade to Adobe Creative Suite Premium Edition for US$749, or the Standard Edition for $549. Current owners of any previous edition can upgrade for $169. The same applies to InDesign and Illustrator.

Probably Photoshop would be the only product that would be of interest to most of us

Calendar of Events

There is a calendar of events for the Ocala, Lake, and Villages Mugs groups on the OMUG website. Just go to the home page and click on the Calendar of Events on the left side of the page. This calendar can be downloaded to your computer as a graphic jpeg file and opened or placed in nearly any application.

Tech Tool Pro
According to the Micromat web site, the long awaited OS X version of Tech Tool Pro, previously scheduled release sometime in October, is now slated for a November debut.

Website of Low Prices
www.price.com is an easy way to find a low price on a Macintosh related item. It searches the Internet for prices and then lists items by categories. Or, you can search for a particular item. Next time you need a toner cartridge or two, try typing its product number into the search field. We were amazed at the prices we saw.

Save Those Updaters
You have run a half dozen Apple updates using Software Update System Preference. Now you find you must reformat your hard drive, or reinstall OS X. Wouldn’t it be nice if you had all the Installers somewhere backed up on DVD or CD? They will all disappear unless you take steps to prevent that. You can.

When you install an update using Software Update, after selecting the update(s) but before installing them, go to Update menu in Software Update and select “Download Checked Items to Desktop.” Th•e download will start as soon as you select it. When the download is complete, you then run the Installers. Th•is way, after you have installed the updates, the Installers remain on your desktop. Back them up to either another hard drive, a DVD or a CD. Now when you have to do any complete reinstall of OS X, the Installers for all the necessary upgrades will be available, so you do not have to find and download each Installer again.

Rumors has it that Apple will roll-out a new version of their iLife software suite in January. This would give us new versions of iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie and iDVD.

Also rumored is a major upgrade to Keynote and the release of a new word processor application.
