Volume 57 - June 2003

The View From Here
Tim Rankin, OMUG President

Realizing that Summer is beginning and folks will be going on vacation and to parts unknown, our OMUG attendance normally takes quite a hit this time of year. My plea to you is if you’re not out of town on the night of our general OMUG meeting please come out and support your club. We need a good showing at these general meetings to provide an adequate audience for those coming out to present programs. It takes time and effort to prepare material to present to a group and it is “icing on the cake” when there is a good turnout to learn from and enjoy the presentation. Realizing too that not everyone is interested in every program presented, still it is important that you make every effort to come out and support our group. Remember, if the particular program being presented is not your primary interest, it is possible that one of the next programs may be right up your alley. Just remember, you might be the one giving the next presentation and you would greatly appreciate a nice turnout for your program. See you Tuesday night June 3rd!

OMUG June Program

Stephanie Rhode, our new local Mac Evangelist, will present a program on CD’s and DVD’s. She is going to tell you everything you wanted to know and more when it comes to understanding and using this great technology. Stephanie is a computer trainer and regularly holds seminars, does in home training as well as training via the internet. She lives in On Top of the World and writes a computer column for the South Marion Citizen in which she promotes our OMUG group. Even though she is more oriented toward the “Pee Cee”, she has an affection for things Macintosh and has close relatives who have “seen the light” and are using Macs. Don’t miss this presentation as practically everyone uses CD’s and more and more are venturing into the world of the DVD. If you would like to get a preview of exactly what Stephanie Rhode is all about go to www.endtheclutter.com which is her very well done web site and check it out!

No OS 9 in Next Photoshop Release

Adobe is expected to release the next version of Photoshop sometime this fall and they have announced that it will not support Mac OS 9. Future version of Mac OS X will not support OS 9 and it is felt that software developers will follow suit and make their future releases available for OS X only.

DiskWarrior 3.0 Arrives

Alsoft, Inc. has release DiskWarrior 3.0, their latest version of the utility program. It rebuilds, recovers, and optimizes HFS and HFS Plus disk directories by building a replacement directory that can be previewed and compared to the existing directory. The new version is Mac OS X native.

DiskWarrior 3 is for Mac OS X 10.2.1 and up. The CD includes DiskWarrior 2.1 and an earlier version of Mac OS for Macs not capable of running Mac OS X and it sells for $79.95. If you have version 2 you can update for $39.95 plus shipping and handling. The updates must be purchased through Alsoft web site (http://www.alsoft.com/) or the phone sales store.

Speed Up Your Searches

When you use its built-in Find function, Mac OS X v10.2 searches by default in over a dozen languages besides English. To speed up your search, choose Preferences in the Finder menu and click the Select button at the very bottom of the dialog. In the ensuing dialog, turn off the languages that you don’t need searched, and it will speed up the indexing of your content, helping you ‘Find’ even faster.

See the Whole Name
Place your cursor over a very long file name (not the icon, but the name) in list or column view, and Jaguar shows you to complete file name after a brief pause. Hold down the Option key and the complete file names show up without a pause. The Option key trick works in icon view as well.

Launch Classic Easily
Applications that run in Mac OS X’s Classic environment sometimes run poorly if Classic isn’t already running before you launch the application. You can place a Classic launcher in the Dock by starting Classic (use the Classic pane in System Preferences), then while Classic is starting up, Control/click the Classic icon in the Dock and select “Keep In Dock” from the contextual menu that appears. From then on, you can start Classic by clicking its icon in the Dock.
